Abstract
During pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes, pancreatic beta cells proliferate to compensate insulin resistance, followed by beta cell failure with a decrease in beta cell mass. As increasing beta cell mass has been considered as a therapeutic strategy for type 2 diabetes, identification of factors regulating beta cell proliferation becomes a research of interests. Here we briefly review the regulation of beta cell mass by insulin and glucose, which has been known as strong mitogen to induce beta cell proliferation.
